Togo calfskin

Togo is calfskin whose grain is made in the tanning drum. The hides turn while their fibers contract, and the surface gathers into rounded pebbles, with the hide's wrinkles and veins still visible. A hide can lose up to 40% of its size along the way. Embossed leathers copy the look with a heated plate, which stamps the same pattern from edge to edge.

How it ages

No two alike

Nobody pressed this pattern in. Togo gets its grain on its own while the hide is tanned, so the pebbles change across every inch and no two wallets share them. Look closely and you'll find the wrinkles and veins the hide carried.

The hide's serial on the Numbered Togo Speed Wallet

One hide, three grades

Most of the hide becomes Fine Grain, a tight, even pebble. The few areas with the deepest texture become Deep Grain, with bigger pebbles and veins you can follow with a fingertip. Fine Grain: 25 per hide. Deep Grain: 5 per hide. The same count for the Speed Wallet and the Speed Wallet Mini. The hide's serial number goes to a single wallet, the Numbered. Counted by the hide, all three are highly collectible.

RFID protection

A blocking layer inside the wallet keeps wireless readers from scanning the cards in its pull-strap slots, even when a stranger is standing close on a crowded train. The access pocket is left open on purpose, for your transit card.

Every Togo Speed Wallet is cut and stitched by hand in small batches and inspected before it leaves the workshop. When a grade is gone, there won't be another from this hide.

Togo, explained

It's the calfskin you'll find on handbags that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Its pebble grain forms during tanning: the hides turn in a drum while their fibers contract, shrinking by up to 40%, and the surface gathers on its own. Embossed leathers get a similar look from a heated press, which stamps one pattern across the whole hide.

All three come from the same hide. Fine Grain is the tight, even pebble that covers most of it. Deep Grain comes from the few areas with the deepest texture, with bigger pebbles and visible veins, which is why each hide gives only five. The Numbered is cut where the hide's serial number runs across the front, so each number goes to one wallet only.

Because every grade is counted by the hide. Each hide gives 25 Fine Grain and 5 Deep Grain Speed Wallets, and its serial number goes to one Numbered wallet. When a grade sells out, there are no more from that hide. It's also why they're highly collectible.
